Morning
Prayer
Psalm 68: 1 – 20
A psalm of praise to a practical God, our God. We are
provided with the practical necessities: homes, care for orphans and widows,
water, food, crops, protection, peace and God’s presence - relationship.
Jeremiah 33: 10 – 26
Jeremiah prophesies again that God has said that in
this place that “is a waste, without human beings or animals” (v’s 10 & 12)
life will be restored. And the promises to the patriarchs will be upheld. There
will be the re-establishment of the Kingdom from David’s lineage.
Luke 16: 14 – 31
The Pharisees ridicule Jesus. Jesus responds by
upholding all the law and the prophets. He tells the story of the rich man and
the poor man, Lazarus by the gate. The Mosaic law and the prophets guide us to
do what is right for God.

Evening
Prayer
Psalm 68: (21 – 23) 24 – 35
This section of the psalm moves first to the fierce
protection God provides for his people and then to a procession and celebration
of God and the people of Israel, united in Jerusalem at the temple.
Genesis 49: 1 – 21
Jacob gathers his sons and tells them their qualities
and the future of their descendants.
“The sceptre shall not depart from Judah”.
Hebrews 11: 1 – 12
This is an ode to faith. By faith… and the stories
from the faithful in the Old Testament are revisited: Abel, Enoch, Noah,
Abraham and Sarah. Their faithfulness is remembered.
