Collects

Prayers developed from the daily readings

Monday 17 February 2014
Morning Prayer

Psalm 106: 1 – 24

The psalmist begins praising God and marvelling at God’s faithful love and great deeds. He then charges that we like the people of the past – from the Exodus to the time of Aaron – go astray.

Proverbs 29: 1 – 16

These proverbs set out how valuable it is to be flexible (as opposed to stubborn), righteousness, just, wise, avoid flattering others and be diligent.

Luke 6: 1 – 11

The disciples were seen to pick and eat grain on the Sabbath and Jesus healed the sick on the Sabbath. There were some Pharisees watching who were angry about this breech of the law. Jesus makes it clear that there was precedent and that the Sabbath was made for people – not people for the Sabbath.

Abba Father, you know us through and through. You know that even when we are following your commands we can still get carried away. Keep us flexible; keep us returning to you so that we can live lives to your glory and honour through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Evening Prayer

Psalm 106: 25 – 50

The ancient people kept shifting allegiance and worshipping other gods. They even conducted live sacrifice of their children. Yet God delivered them, showed compassion. The psalmist asks for God to gather us in to give thanks, glory and praise to God.

Genesis 26: 34 – 27: 29

Rebekah and Jacob deceive and directly lie to Isaac in order for Jacob to receive the blessing that was Esau’s by right.

1 Timothy 3

For Paul, people in authorised church roles need to be able to administer, to be of good standing, serious. He sets these parameters to enable social acceptance of our church that proclaims the great mystery of our faith.

Merciful God, you forgive us even stray far from you; you welcome us home. We thank you for your faithfulness. We take seriously that we are the human face of your church, which proclaims the great mystery of faith: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.
Help us as we examine our day. We pray for the insight and strength we need in this review. And we ask for your boundless grace, which will sustain and encourage us so that we can begin again tomorrow to live and work to your praise and glory, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
