Morning Prayer

Psalm 147

This psalm rejoices in singing praise to a gracious God. God builds up the community, gathers the outcasts, heals the broken-hearted and binds their wounds. This is the same God who created the stars. Sing to God.

God brings the rain that brings grass and feeds the animals and allows birds to sing. God isn’t interested in who is the fastest or strongest but in our reverence.

Jerusalem is charged to praise the Lord: for the city, the safety of the children, the peace. This God who controls all the weather looks after us. No other God is like our God.

John 16: 25 – 33

Jesus tells the disciples that he uses figures of speech to help them understand what he means. Jesus will teach them more clearly in days to come not through speech. Then they will ask God for things in Jesus’s name because God loves them and they believe in Jesus. Jesus is going to the Father.

The disciples say they understand that Jesus knows all things and that Jesus is from God. Jesus gently challenges them and says that soon they will be scattered, will go home and leave Jesus. But Jesus will not be alone – God is with Him. He warns them that they will be persecuted and to have courage.

Loving and restoring creator God you have made everyone of us, and everything that exists. When we become competitive or misunderstand you, when we become fearful, are scattered and don’t communicate with you, bring us home. Bring us to Jesus where we can hear his words, be healed and take courage so that we sing your praises and celebrate your eternal love for us through Jesus Christ our saviour redeemer and friend. Amen

Evening Prayer

Proverbs 8: 22 – 9: 10

Wisdom was created by God before the beginning of creation and had a part in all God’s creative actions. Wisdom was there involved in the creation of everything. Wisdom call to us all to be listen, to keep her ways, to hear her instruction for whoever finds Wisdom obtains favour from God. Those who do not get her injure themselves and those who hate wisdom love death.

Wisdom is like a woman who has set a table for people to come, eat and drink: to lay immaturity aside and to get insight. Wisdom says, if you correct a scoffer or rebuke someone wicked you will only reap abuse and hurt. If you correct someone wise they will appreciate it, become wiser, teach the righteous and gain learning.

Revering God is the beginning of wisdom and learning about God brings insight.

Psalm 33: 1 – 9

This psalm is a great hymn of praise to God citing evidence including creation. Creation is so awesome we stand in reverent silence.

Ephesians 3: 14 – 21

Paul prays that the Ephesians be strengthened through the presence of Christ’s spirit in their hearts, be grounded in love and have the capacity to know how wide, long, high and deep is the love of Christ for us. Paul prays that this love that surpasses all knowledge enables us to be filled with God. To Christ be the glory forever. Amen.

Wondrous God, in your wisdom you created everything and through revering you and receiving Christ we can experience your love that surpasses all knowledge and allows us to be filled with your presence. Help us lay our immaturity aside and welcome Jesus into our hearts. Open us to be in awe of your creation and the presence of your wisdom so that we can be grounded in your deep, wide love and give glory to Christ forever. Amen
