Prayers developed from the daily readings

Saturday 16 April 2016
Morning Prayer

Psalm 105: 1 – 22

The psalm praises God’s faithfulness. It praises creation and God’s love. This portion recalls the early story of Abraham through to Joseph being placed in charge of Pharaoh’s household.

Leviticus 26: 27 – 45

This section reinforces the consequences of not following the commandments and of not keeping the Sabbath days and years.

John 10: 31 – 42

Jesus is about to be stoned. He asks them for which good work will he be stoned? They say they will stone him for blasphemy for making himself God. Jesus replies using scripture (Ps 82: 6) that we are all made Gods. Scripture cannot be annulled and he is doing God’s work, so how can it be blaspheming to claim that he is God’s Son? He tells them to believe in the works even if they don’t believe in him. God is in Christ and Christ is in God. He evades arrest.

Faithful and creative God, when we follow your commandments you protect us and teach us how to nurture our earth and ourselves. Thank you for the lessons and saving grace through Jesus. Be with us this day, help us to obey your commands and to trust in you so that we need not fear challenge or hostility and can, through our words and actions, love and care for all people and bring glory and honour to you always and everywhere through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord and the power of your Holy Spirit. Amen.

Evening Prayer

Psalm 105: 23 – 45

The psalm continues to praise God’s faithfulness to the covenant and tells the story of the famine, Israel going to Egypt, the Exodus and the arrival in the Promised Land. Praise the Lord.

Exodus 23: 20 – 33

God tells Moses that he will send an angel to lead them and enable them to successfully reach and populate the Promised Land. But, they must not worship idols or other Gods in all their journey and interactions with the other nations of people.

1 Corinthians 3: 5 – 17

Paul goes on to explain that the different teachers all have different role. Paul built the foundation and there is only one - Christ. The others help build the community of believers and their success will be seen when the communities are tested – like a building is tested by fire.

He reminds the people that they are holy. That each is a temple and God’s Spirit dwells in each of them. If anyone destroys any of them, God will respond.

Holy God, you answer our prayers, send us angels to guide us, give us clear instructions and your Son and Holy Spirit. We praise you and thank you. Be with us as we reflect on our day. Help us to imagine ourselves as a temple. Help us to observe how our temple grows, is reinforced and embellished through your grace so that we can tomorrow, go out in confidence to bring glory and honour to you in what we think say and do through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord and the power of your Holy Spirit. Amen.
