Prayers developed from the daily readings

Sunday 15 November 2015
Morning Prayer

Psalm 62

For God my soul waits in silence: my salvation and my hope come from God. All people and things and powers are temporary. God is our rock and fortress and we shall not be shaken. Steadfast love and power belongs to God.

Mark 13: 24 – 37

Jesus talks of a time to come, after the suffering the real end will still be to come: when the sun and moon fail and the Son of Man comes in power and glory.

We are to learn from the fig tree. We can tell by looking that summer approaches. Equally we will be able to tell when the end approaches. No one knows exactly. We are to keep watch.

Oh God you are our refuge, our power and the source of love. Be with us all through these times of suffering to calm and still our souls, to remind us that all powers are temporary and to keep us from being shaken so that we may with your love and compassion support those who have suffered loss, injury and fright and be for them a fortress and a strength through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord and the power of your Holy Spirit in our hearts. Amen.

Evening Prayer

1 Samuel 1: 21 – 28 and 2: 11

Hannah does not go to the temple until her son Samuel is weaned. She goes then with a three year old bull, flour and wine and lends her child to the Lord’s service at the temple. Samuel remains at the temple with Eli to minister to the Lord. His parents return to Ramah.

Psalm 16

This psalm praises and blesses God and delights in the faithful. The psalmist commits to support people of faith and uses personal testimony of how God has enriched his life.

Hebrews 10: 32 – 39

The writer reminds people that in the early days of their faith they had hard times, their possessions were taken, people were injured and imprisoned and they supported one another. They are encouraged to keep the faith and not to shrink back from God’s saving grace.

God of saving grace, who delights in and enriches the lives of the faithful, be with us now in the quiet of this day. We will all have hard times, difficult promises to keep and commitments to uphold. Encourage and embolden us Lord so that in the morning we may arise with joy and praise to do your will using our lives in your ministry of love through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord and Saviour. Amen.
