Morning Prayer

Psalm 77

The psalmist is deeply distressed, not sleeping at night, feels alienated from God and wonders whether God has gone. He decides to remember all the blessings of the past and the evidence of God’s enduring protection. He ceases moaning and instead gives thanks.

1 Samuel 1: 21 – 2: 11

Hannah does not go to the temple until her son Samuel is weaned. She goes then with a three year old bull, flour and wine and lends her child to the Lord’s service at the temple. She prays. Hannah’s prayer is one of high praise for God’s strength, power, compassion and justice.

Acts 4: 23 – 31

Peter and John return to the Christian community and report what happened with the chief priests and officials. The community fervently praises God and prays. They ask God to look at the threats and give them courage to speak God’s word while God performs healings and wonders in the name of Jesus. After the prayers the whole place shakes, they are filled with the Holy Spirit and speak God’s words boldly.

Eternal generous and compassionate God you continually care for us. From ancient times we have evidence of your power and grace. Help us today when we encounter distress, threat, disappointment or feel far from you, to remember your gifts of love and your blessings. Remind us to hand our concerns to your care, give you thanks and praise and receive from you an increase in your Holy Spirit so that we may, with courage, speak and act boldly for you through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord and the power of your Holy Spirit in our hearts. Amen.

Evening Prayer

Psalm 78: 1 – 15

The psalmist encourages people to tell the stories of God and his relationship with the people to their children, in parables, the old sayings, the history, decrees and miracles so that they will not be stubborn or rebellious.

Proverbs 1: 20 - 33

Wisdom is around – everywhere and she asks why are we going to stay simple and scoff at knowledge? If we don’t learn and seek wisdom, if we don’t learn from mistakes, then calamity will occur. Waywardness and complacency are fatal. Those who listen to wisdom will be secure and live without dread.

1 Corinthians 16: 13 - 24

Paul says, “Keep alert, stand firm in your faith, be courageous, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love” (vs 13-14).

Paul commends the people to service and blesses them.
