Morning Prayer

Psalms 108 and 109: 21 – 31

The psalmist is David. He rises before dawn singing praises to God and showing his steadfast love of God. He asks for victories in battles recalling the promises of God.

The second segment is someone who has enemies who have cursed him. Instead he fasts and asks for God’s blessings and safety. His redemption will be enough to put the accusers to shame.

2 Chronicles 26: 1 - 15

Uzziah’s early reign is recorded. He is faithful to God, is successful in expanding the kingdom, in agriculture, infrastructure development and building an army. He wins respect and prosperity.

Acts 17: 1 – 14

Paul and Silas arrive in Thessalonica and preach at the synagogue on the Sabbaths. They use the scriptures and argue the case of Jesus as Messiah. Some Jews believe, women believe, Greeks believe. But a small group of Jews stir up trouble and have local Christians arrested. Paul and Silas go to Beroea and do the same thing, with many new Christians as a result. The Jews from Thessalonica who oppose Paul’s message come and stir up trouble again. Paul is sent to the coast but Timothy and Silas remain in Beroea.

God of steadfast love, you bless us and bring us to ultimate safety through Jesus Christ. Help us to recall your grace and promises. Give us courage to build our faith in times of trouble and to seek your blessings on all people so that we have no more need to flee or to build defences but live in your peace through Jesus Christ our Lord and the power of your Holy Spirit. Amen.

Evening Prayer

Psalm 119: 105 – 128

This psalm is full of powerful one-liners. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path”; “You are my hiding place and my shield”; “Deal with your servant according to your steadfast love, and teach me your statutes”; “Truly I love your commandments more than gold, more than fine gold”.

Song of Songs 1

This is a love song. The woman yearns for relationship and seeks a rendezvous with her lover. He compliments and they share their adoration for each other.

Romans 10: 5 – 13

Paul explains that Moses said life comes through obeying the law. But Paul says that the life that comes through faith is of the heart (believing in your heart) and as close to us as our lips (confessing Jesus is Lord). We do not have to search or strive for it. Those who do this will be saved and there is no distinction between people from any culture or race.

God of love and deep relationship, you show us the pathway to you. You light the way and keep it safe. And just like a lover all you ask of us is to love you with our whole heart and speak out the truth of your love for us so that we can live fully and completely with you through your Son Jesus our Lord and redeemer.
