Collects

Prayers developed from the daily readings

Sunday 8 June 2014 Pentecost or Whitsunday
Morning Prayer

Song of God’s Children[1]: Romans 8: 2, 14, 15b – 19

In Christ’s Spirit we are:
set free from the law of sin and death;
led by the Spirit of God and made children of God so that we may call God “Abba” (daddy);
supported by the Spirit as heirs of God;
confident that whatever our suffering now we will be glorified with God in the hereafter and,
assured that the glory will overwrite any suffering now.
For the whole of creation is waiting for us to be revealed to God.

John 7: 37 – 52

Jesus says that out of the believer’s heart flows streams of living water and proclaims that people should come to him for spiritual refreshment. Some in the crowd recognise him as a prophet or Messiah and others ridicule.

The temple police are accountable to the Pharisees who ask why they had not arrested Jesus. They reply that they have never heard anyone speak like that. Nicodemus defends Jesus and says any one has a right to a trial first. The Pharisees reply that the scriptures say nothing about a prophet coming from Galilee.

Unlimited God, through Christ you enable us to run to you, to reach out and hold your hand and a child does a parent. Through your Spirit you refresh us and free us from prescriptions and the narrow interpretation of your word. May we this day feel the freedom you bring: feel the hope and feel the joy of knowing that we are yours forever through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord and your Holy Spirit. Amen.

Evening Prayer

Joel 2: 28 – 34

When the Spirit comes we will all receive it. We will prophesy. Old people will dream and young people see visions.  There will be all signs in the sky and every one who calls on God will be saved.

Psalm 103: 13 – 22

As parents have compassion for their children so God has compassion for us. Our lives are fleeting and short like a flower or like grass.
God’s steadfast love is eternal. God is eternal and mighty. “Bless the Lord, O my soul” (V.22).

Galatians 5: 13 – 26

We are called to freedom not to self-indulgence but to the freedom that means we serve each other. We are to love one another. We are to live guided by the spirit not the wants of the flesh. Our guide is: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

Holy, mighty and eternal God we thank you for your gift of your Spirit. Keep us with you so that everyday we may be guided to choose love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, and the power of your Holy Spirit in our hearts. Amen.
