Collects

Prayers developed from the daily readings

Tuesday 6 May 2014
Morning Prayer

Psalm 18: 1 – 31

David exuberantly praises the Lord for saving him from death at the hands of his enemies. The images used are like a volcanic eruption. David is ecstatic with what he can do with God’s help. He rejoices utterly in God, the only God: our God.

Leviticus 23: 22 – 38

This is a more details set of instructions about the essential holy days and festivals and how to fast for the Day of Atonement.

John 9: 13 – 23

The Pharisees call the man who had previously been blind before them to find out whether he had really been healed. They interview the man’s parents. They asked how the healing occurred. The people know if they proclaimed Jesus as messiah they will be put out of the synagogue.

Almighty God nothing is beyond your power to change or heal. Help us today in 1000 little ways in our thoughts, words, deeds and contemplations of our hearts to proclaim you Lord, God, Saviour and Messiah through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord and the power of your Holy Spirit, Amen.

Evening Prayer

Psalm 18: 32 – 38 (39 – 44) 45 – 52

David continues his great psalm of praise for deliverance from enemies and as the warrior king he had to be describes his supremacy in the battle. He is more subdued at the end, blessing God, extoling God’s name, praising God for his steadfast love and care.

Exodus 19: 16 – 20: 17

God comes to Sinai as a great cloud and thunderstorm. Moses is on the mountain and no-one is to come near. God instructs Moses to bring Aaron on to the mountain. God tells Moses the Ten Commandments.

1 Corinthians 1: 10 – 19

Paul calls for unity in the community – he has been told that there are divisions over who was baptised by whom. Paul is glad he can be impartial. He says that Christ did not send him to baptise but to proclaim the Gospel, and not with the skills of a convincing orator. Because when we think about it, the message about the cross is useless to those who are lost, but to those who are saved it restores us through the power of God.

Holy God of restoration and hope, who restored and re-ignited a warrior king, restored a nation from slavery and gave it the tools to establish just societies and restored Paul and the early Christian communities; restore us this night. Refresh and re-invigorate us so that in the morning we can awake with energy and joy to work in this world to your praise and glory through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord and the power of your Holy Spirit, Amen.
