Prayers developed from the daily readings

Monday 5 May 2014
Morning Prayer

Psalms 15 and 16

The first psalm lists the moral characteristics of people who are permitted in the temple. People who tell the truth, care for their neighbours and behave ethically.

The second psalm praises and blesses God and delights in the faithful. The psalmist commits to support people of faith and uses personal testimony of how God has enriched his life.

Leviticus 22: 31 – 23: 11

God gives Moses a command about the essential festivals of the year the Sabbath each week, Passover, Festival of Unleavened Bread and, the Harvest Festival.

John 9: 1 – 12

Jesus and the disciples encounter a blind man. The disciples ask whether the man is blind because of sins by his parents or his own sins. Jesus says, neither, but that he is blind so that Jesus could do what he is sent to do. This is possible while Jesus is with us but there will be a time when such healing is not possible. Community members test and question the previously blind man about his identity and how the healing occurred.

Holy and almighty God you provide us with sacred spaces, give us rest, encourage joy and thankfulness, heal us and teach us. Give us grace today to accept the people we encounter as our opportunity to do what we are here to do: to use our skills and abilities and to love our neighbour so that your peace and love spread throughout the world you love through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord and the power of your Holy Spirit. Amen.

Holy and loving God you want to be in relationship with us. You want to engage with, talk to, interact with and strengthening us. Be with us now as we reflect on today and help us recognise times when we could have called on you and did not and those times when you were with us, supporting and uplifting us through the power of your Holy Spirit. We ask this through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord Amen.
