Collects

Prayers developed from the daily readings

Sunday 25 May 2014
Morning Prayer

Psalm 112

This is a psalm of blessing. It blesses those who fear the Lord and gives a list of their characteristics: security, righteousness, wealth, generosity, unafraid of evil, firm faith, secure in the Lord, generously giving to the poor and shunned by the wicked.

Revelation 21: 22 – 22: 5

In the city of God there is no temple – God and the Lamb are the temple. God is the light and the Lamb is the lamp. The gates are always open and glory is brought in from all nations. There is a crystal clear river and the tree of life with twelve kinds of fruit and leaves that heal. Only blessed things and people are in the city and they worship God.

Magnificent Lord in you is all safety, nourishment and grace. We give you thanks for your gifts to us both now and eternally. Be with us this day as we worship you so that we feel your closeness, praise you more fully and proclaim your love for us through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord and the power of your Holy Spirit. Amen.

Evening Prayer

Acts 8: 14 – 25

Simon, the Samaritan who had previously been a magician offers to pay the apostles, Peter and John so that he can get the power to give the Holy Spirit to others. Peter tells Simon he cannot buy this gift with money, that his heart is not aligned to God and that he should repent.

Psalm 66: 1 – 8

A great song of praise to God: “Make a joyful noise to God, all the earth” (v 1).  The psalmist lists the some of the deeds of God and encourages us to bless and praise the Lord.

Revelation 11: 15 - 19

The seventh angel blows a trumpet and the heavenly voices proclaim that the eternal kingdom of God and the Messiah has come to the world.

Then the twenty-four elders fall of their faces and worship proclaiming the time of judgement, the time of reward for the saints who love and fear God and the time of destruction of those who destroy the earth. Then the heavens open, the Ark of the Covenant is visible, there is lightning, thunder, rumbling, an earthquake and hail.

Awesome and powerful God, it is through your gifts and your timing that you and your kingdom are revealed and come to us. We are the recipients of your grace and favour and judgement. Be with us this night as we give you thanks and praise for all your blessings and gifts to us through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, and your Holy Spirit. Amen.
