Collects

Prayers developed from the daily readings

Sunday 9 March 2014
Morning Prayer

Psalm 91

This psalm tells of the protection of God for those who are faithful “You who live in the shelter of the Most High”.

2 Corinthians 10: 1 – 7

Paul is facing opposition in Corinth and is called bold when he is away and meek when he is there. He claims the meekness and assumes divine weaponry against critics of the church. Arguments will be contested, thoughts made captive but only to obey Christ.

God of majesty and grace, you shelter us, you stand by us and you give us the tools we need to proclaim your work and salvation. Help us to be bold and meek in the right measure so that we win hearts and minds that wish to be faithful to you through Jesus Christ our Lord and the power of your Holy Spirit. Amen.

Evening Prayer

Exodus 24: 1 – 11

This section of Exodus is a detailed description of the covenant ratification ceremony with Moses, God and the 12 tribal groups of Israel.

Psalm 51: 1 – 17
This is a psalm of penitence and has the words,  “Lord, open my lips and my mouth will declare your praise”.

Matthew 26: 1 – 35

In this section, Jesus tells the disciples that he will be crucified; the chief priests and the elders conspire to kill Jesus; a woman anoints Jesus with costly ointment from an alabaster jar; Jesus reinforces that he will soon be gone, and this act prepares him for burial; Judas asks how much he will get for betraying Jesus – 30 pieces of silver; the last Supper, and the prediction that the disciples will desert. Finally, here is Peter’s defence and the agreement of all the disciples that they too would not desert.

Most merciful God, who sent your son Jesus to live with us and go through extreme suffering, forgive us all the things we have done that hinder your plans. Help us, by the power of your Holy Spirit, to walk with Christ, to stay by his side through all the trials of our world through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

*Kookaburras have a loud raucous laugh, thought by some to predict rain.
They also hold to family groups. They are a community bird caring for the young as a family.
