Collects

Prayers developed from the daily readings

Monday 10 March 2014
Morning Prayer

Psalm 25

This psalm is a plea for protection from personal enemies. The psalmist asks for guidance and forgiveness.

Jeremiah 25: 1 – 17

Jeremiah prophesies that Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon will overtake Judah and Jerusalem. The destruction is the consequence of not following God's commands and not listening to the prophets.

Luke 11: 14 – 28

Jesus heals a mute person. The crowds questioned whether he was doing this as a more powerful evil force. Jesus talked about a house divided not being able to stand. He also talked about the removal of evil and being made clean but the trial can return and be harder. A woman blesses Jesus's mother because of his work and he replies saying that everyone who hears the word of God and obeys is blessed.

Almighty and caring God, you have sent prophets and your son to teach us your commands and show us your path. We ask that Jesus and your Holy Spirit be with us every step of the way today protecting us from trials we cannot counter alone so that we are able to effectively do your will and bring glory to you, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Evening Prayer

Psalm 27

“The Lord is my light and salvation: whom shall I fear?”  The psalmist seeks God’s face and God’s path and ends with “Wait for the Lord: be strong and let your heart take courage: wait for the Lord.”

Genesis 39

Joseph is put in service in Pharaoh’s house and does well. He progresses to be in charge of the entire household and the Pharaoh’s household is blessed because of Joseph. Pharaoh’s wife wrongly accuses Joseph of sexual harassment and he is put in prison. Here again Joseph progresses to be in charge of all the prisoners and their care.

Hebrews 3: 1 – 15

“Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden you hearts as in the rebellion.” Moses was like the Chief of God’s household and faithful. Jesus is God’s son and we are in his house. So, we are not to be like those who turned against Moses. We are to stay faithful to our hope: Christ.

Loving and compassionate God, you know that in this world bad things happen to good people. You remind us too that when we are with you and part of your household we need not fear, no matter what the world throws at us. Hold us in your grace, guide us when we are lost and puzzled and keep us from all harm, today and forever through your dear son our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
