Prayers developed from the daily readings

Friday 28 February 2014
Morning Prayer

Psalms 143, 146

The psalmist is in hiding and sounds depressed yet, he is still reaching out to God; he is still trusting and obedient.
The next psalm is one of praise to God who is trustworthy – more than princes: more than mortals.

Jeremiah 46: 27 – 47: 7

Jeremiah promises that though Israel will be punished it will not be utterly destroyed – just corrected. He then goes on to prophesy about the Philistines an their demise.

Luke 8: 19 – 25

Jesus does two things: first when told that his mother and brothers were visiting he says that they are people who listen to and follow God. This comes after the parable of the sower; Jesus grew up in good soil.
The next section is Jesus quieting the storm with the result that he asks where is the disciples’ faith and they wonder who Jesus is since he can control the weather.

Magnificent God, what joy to behold your word and actions for us? We thank you for your scriptures, for these lessons that guide and heal us. Help us to be people who listen to you and follow you. Help us be people of faith who know you well and trust in you so that we may help build your family through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Evening Prayer

Psalm 119: 153 – 176

This portion of the psalm is a plea for preservation of life from someone who is devout “my soul keeps your decrees” and who admits he has gone astray.

Genesis 33

Esau is gracious and welcoming. Jacob has to insist he accept the gifts. Esau wants to protect Jacob, his family and flocks. Jacob is grateful but explains that he has to move slowly since the children are little and the flocks are nursing. Jacob goes to Succoth builds his house and farm then buys a plot of land at Shechem where he erects an altar to God.

2 Timothy 3: 10 – 17

Paul asks Timothy to consider Paul’s life and all the struggles and persecutions he has endured and that he has been rescued and restored by God. He instructs Timothy to continue in what he believes, and that all scripture is inspired by God, to teach, to guide, to strengthen and to equip us.
