Collects

Prayers developed from the daily readings

Monday 24 February 2014
Morning Prayer

Psalms 130, 131, 133

The first psalm is a lament and recognition of God’s forgiveness and steadfast love. The second describes deep humility: a calmed and quieted soul that waits in trust for the Lord. The third psalm rejoices in family peace and harmony.

Jeremiah 44: 1 – 14

Jeremiah warn the Jewish people living in Egypt to be faithful to God and keep to the law or greater disaster will befall them than what had happened in Judah.

Luke 7: 24 – 35

Jesus makes it clear that John the Baptist is the prophet who comes before the Messiah and that those who accepted John’s baptism accepted God’s purpose for their lives. Baptism through fire and the Holy Spirit is to come. There are people listening who reject both John and Jesus and use how and with whom they eat as the excuse. Jesus ends with a statement challenging people to use their power of wisdom to decide.

Saviour God, you always love us and you want the best for us. You have sent prophets and your own Son to us. We sit in humble awe of you. Help us to choose wisely in our decisions today to engage in your world so that we work to your praise and glory and for the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ and the power of your Holy Spirit. Amen.

Evening Prayer

Psalms 132, 134

The first psalm is a reminder to God that David promised to bring the arc of the covenant to a permanent dwelling in Jerusalem. God in return indicates that if David’s offspring keep the commandments then the dynasty will last.
The second psalm is a blessing.

Genesis 31: 1 – 21

Jacob is aware that Laban and his sons no longer look on him favourably. He discusses the matter with Leah and Rachel. They support him, take the symbols of family leadership from Laban’s household and together, escape towards Gilead.

2 Timothy 1: 1 – 14

We are reminded that God’s gift of the Holy Spirit is one of power, love, self-discipline and trust. We are charged to hold on to sound teaching and be courageous. This is not hard while with the grace of Jesus our Lord and the aid of the Holy Spirit.

Faithful and loving God, we cannot measure your love for us. Help us to reflect on our activities today and know the times we called on your power to love, to choose the right thing to do, and to trust, so that we are reminded of your presence with us in your gift of your Holy Spirit through Jesus Christ our saviour. Amen.
