Prayers developed from the daily readings

Friday 21 February 2014
Morning Prayer

Psalms 121, 122 and 123

In these three psalms the themes are the eternal faithfulness of God and how he cares for us; the joy and gladness we experience as we enter the house of the Lord with a prayer for safety and peace in Jerusalem, and finally, a prayer for deliverance from those who ridicule and oppress us.

Proverbs 30: 29 – 31: 9

These proverbs carry four separate ideas. First, some things that have stately stride or gait – a lion, a strutting rooster, a he-goat and a king.
Second, that if we are full of our self-importance or stirring things up we had best be quiet since generating anger in others causes strife.
Third, if you are a ruler, stay sober, so that you act properly and preserve people’s rights.
Fourth, be compassionate, relieve the afflicted and speak out for the rights of the poor.

Luke 7: 1 – 10

Jesus goes when asked to heal a centurion’s slave. The centurion comes towards Jesus explaining how unworthy he is and recognising Jesus’s authority. Jesus acknowledges the centurion’s faith. The slave is healed.

Compassionate God, you love us abundantly, you show us how to
care for each other and you came to all of us, healed many of us and brought us to you. Help us to be compassionate and to preserve rights especially people’s right to dignity, so that we reflect your glory and bring praise to you through Jesus Christ and your Holy Spirit. Amen

Evening Prayer

Psalm 119: 129 – 152

The psalmist declares a passion for the scripture and the commandments.  There is a request to learn and know them better. There too is recognition that others do not share this zeal and that leads to persecution. There is a plea to be saved from harm.

Genesis 29: 31 – 30: 24

This section tells the story of the birth of Jacob’s sons up to the birth of Joseph, to the ongoing rivalry between Jacob’s wives Leah and Rachel.

1 Timothy 6: 2c – 10

Paul gives clear instruction about the value of sound teaching and focus on the words of Christ. Christianity brings gains in godliness and contentment it is not about wealth.

Loving God, we thank you for your word that focuses and sustains us. We thank you too for today and all the blessings we have received from you. Give us the passion to read your word and follow you so that we may work to the glory of your kingdom, through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
