Collects

Prayers developed from the daily readings

Wednesday 19 February 2014
Morning Prayer

Psalms 110 and 111

The first psalm is about the new king who on coronation has priest privileges. The second praises God for great deeds, honour, majesty, enduring righteousness and mercy.

Proverbs 30: 5 – 14

These proverbs begin with “Every word of God proves true”. The writer asks to be kept far from lies, to have neither great wealth nor poverty since both made it hard to stay faithful. The proverbs give examples when we might have little insight into our behaviours that hurt others.

Luke 6: 27 – 38

Jesus teaches us to love and bless our enemies, to be generous and not to judge others; forgive and you shall be forgiven.

Wonderful and gracious God, we cannot begin to count all the blessings you give us: the most precious gift of your son our saviour, redeemer and friend. Help us today to value all your creation, to forgive others, be humble and demonstrate love and compassion for all, so that we share your magnificent love. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord and the presence of your Holy Spirit. Amen .

Evening Prayer

Psalms 112 and 113

The first psalm proclaims that the righteous and faithful will receive good things and good reputations. The second psalm praises God especially for helping those who are humble and poor.

Genesis 28

Isaac blesses Jacob and sends him to his uncle, Laban. On the way Jacob stops and sleeps the night and experiences the presence of God. He hears God make promises to him about his future. On waking he named the place Bethel.

1 Timothy 5: 1 – 16

Paul instructs on protocols for addressing members of the community; “do not speak harshly”. Then Paul outlines the principles for welfare support in the early church community.

Loving and merciful God, we thank your for your teaching through the Bible. Help us every day to be faithful, to work for your glory, to speak respectfully and to respond well to those in need. May your mercy and glory shine through our actions and attitudes. We ask this through the love of Jesus Christ and the grace of your Holy Spirit.  Amen.
