Prayers developed from the daily readings

Morning Prayer

Psalm 80

This psalm is a prayer for deliverance from national enemies. It compares Israel to a vine. It asks for God’s hand to be on the one at God’s right hand, to give us life, to restore us and to save us.

2 Corinthians 12: 1 – 9

Paul will only boast in his weakness.

Paul says his weakness, which he has prayed about will stay with him for God has said to him, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.”

Creator God full of abundant grace; help us to find the way when our lives and world are full of war zones and human weakness. Help us see too the great abilities you give us and the visions you set before our eyes so that we boast only in you who brings power through perfect weakness in and through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Evening Prayer

Psalm 11

The psalmist disputes the claim one should run from enemies. The psalmist will stand firm. He says that if the foundation collapses, then all are powerless. The psalmist trusts in the Lord – the firm foundation.

Isaiah 2: 10 – 19 and 4: 2 – 6

When the Lord comes hide in caves and rocks from the glory of God's majesty. Everyone will be made humble and the Lord exalted. On this day anything revered will be humbled, it will be the Lord's day. There will be no more idols.

"On that day the branch of the Lord shall be beautiful and glorious" (verse 4: 2). The righteous will remain and prosper once the city has been cleaned. Then God will establish a protective canopy over Mount Zion and its places of assembly.

Matthew 24: 45 – 51

We need to be like the good manager and be reliable and consistent in our tasks even when the owner is away. We are not to be lazy or partying and only clean up our lives when we know the owner is returning – the return will be unexpected and like a bad manager we will be seen to be hypocrites.

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord everything about you is beautiful and glorious and we will see you face to face. You observe us all and protect us. Help us as we live in the tension of knowing your glory is beyond comprehension and yet exist in a world where we are proud and divert our attentions away from the things you love. Be with us as we manage ourselves day-by-day so that we are counted among the upright and humble in your sight through the power of your Holy Spirit and Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
