Morning Prayer

Psalm 89: 1 – 18

This section of the psalm praises God for faithfulness and steadfastness in all generations, for the creation of the earth and the victory over chaos. Happy are the people who sing praises and walk in God’s pathway.

Hosea 12: 2 – 14

Israel the people owe much to Jacob and his interactions with God. The people were led out of Egypt and guarded by prophets. Again they will live in tents.  Their altars to other gods will be made stone heaps. Hosea proclaims they should return to God, to love and to justice.

Acts 15: 36 – 16: 10

Paul and Barnabas agree to re-visit the communities of believers. After discussion Paul makes the journey with Silas and Barnabas takes Mark with him to Cyprus. Paul and Silas visit communities and on the way collect Timothy whose mother is Jewish. Timothy is circumcised and they continued touring Asia Minor. Paul, in a vision, is called to Macedonia.

God of love, justice and joy you send your ministers to us to guide, to strengthen and to support us in our lives of faith. Let us remember what wonderful things you have done for us and be joyful. Let us recall your great love and gifts of grace, so that we may minister to and strengthen them to do your will and glorify you through Jesus Christ or Lord and your Holy Spirit in our hearts. Amen.

Evening Prayer

Psalm 89: 19 – 38

This section of the psalm states the unalterable covenant with David and his line forever even if the children violate God’s laws, the relationship with David will continue.

Lamentations 4: 1 – 11

Jerusalem has been sacked but the people, more precious than gold are dead or starving. No one can care for the children who are starving and alone. All is destruction.

Romans 9: 1 – 13

Paul explains his concern about the Israelites and their lack of belief in Christ. Their lack of belief does not mean that the word of God has failed. While the Israelites are the people of God’s promise, not all are. God chooses people before their birth for example the choice of Jacob over Esau revealed to his mother. It is not the biological descendants of Israel who are God’s but the people of the promise who are counted as descendants.

Holy God, you are worthy to be praised and you love us all. We do not understand the destruction of the people you love or their children. Capture all the people of your promise in your loving arms. Protect us from harm and bring us safely to a place and time were all may sing your praises, worship you and rejoice in your strength and your victory through Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour. Amen.
