Morning Prayer

Psalm 45

This is an ode to a king’s wedding full of praise and descriptions of beauty, strength and wealth.

Colossians 4: 7 – 18

Paul offers his final greetings and grace to the Colossians recommending the disciples who are bringing the letter and reminding them that they are in everyone’s prayers particularly Epaphras – who is one of their people. Paul asks his chains to be remembered.

Holy and magnificent God you have formed us as a community throughout the world giving us opportunities for praise, to recognise the beauty of you in others, to hear messages of strength, and share the richness of our bonds and abundant gifts of the spirit. Help us leave the comfort of where we are at the moment and consider others – even if we too are imprisoned – so that compassion and welcome grows throughout the world and that our sense of belonging and community in you becomes stronger every day through the power of your Holy Spirit and Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Evening Prayer

Hosea 2: 16 – 23

God proposes to win Israel back to sow the fields again, to have pity and to call Israel his people.

Hosea is required to buy his wife and care for her but not have intercourse with her.

God, having restored Israel will leave her without a king or leadership for a while and then Israel will seek God and a King of David’s house.

Psalm 138

This is a song of praise and deliverance and ends with the psalmist faithfully claiming, “the Lord will fulfil his purpose for me”.

Luke 11: 14 – 28

Jesus heals a mute person. The crowds questioned whether he was doing this as a more powerful evil force. Jesus talked about a house divided not being able to stand. He also talked about the removal of evil and being made clean but the trial can return and be harder. A woman blesses Jesus mother because of his work and he counters saying that everyone who hears the word of God and obeys is blessed.

O God whose love for us endures forever and who has a purpose for each of us, seek us out, put us on the right path, heal us and encourage us to be humble and faithful and altruistic so that all people can return to you and be blessed through the power of your Holy Spirit and Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
