Morning Prayer

Psalm 89: 1 – 18

This section of the psalm praises God for faithfulness and steadfastness in all generations, for the creation of the earth and the victory over chaos. Happy are the people who sing praises and walk in God’s pathway.

2 Chronicles 1

Solomon begins his reign by summoning all commanders, judges, leaders and heads of families to a high place at Gibeon where Moses' tent of meeting with God was maintained even though the ark was in Jerusalem. The bronze altar is there and on this Solomon offers a thousand burnt offerings. That night God appears to Solomon and asked what Solomon wants. Solomon asks for sufficient wisdom to rule the people. God grants wisdom and knowledge.

Solomon amasses great wealth for the city and the people and trade thrives.

Acts 8: 26 – 40

Philip, instructed by an angel of the Lord goes south on the road from Jerusalem to Gaza. An Ethiopian eunuch, the person in charge of the Ethiopian treasury is travelling on the road having worshipped in Jerusalem. He is reading Isaiah. Philip is led by the Spirit to talk to the Ethiopian. He hears him reading and begins a conversation that enables Philip to proclaim the good news of Jesus. The Ethiopian asks to be baptised and goes away rejoicing. Philip proclaims the good news from Azotus to Caesarea.

Evening Prayer

Psalm 89: 19 – 38

This section of the psalm states the unalterable covenant with David and his line forever even if the children violate God’s laws, the relationship with David will continue.

Deuteronomy 26

Moses instructs the people on the form of the thanksgiving ceremony they are to conduct annually. It sets out a liturgy that includes tithing. Moses then reiterates the covenant between God and the people – that they will walk in God's way and obey God's commandments and be God's treasured people, holy to God.

2 Corinthians 8: 16 - 24

Paul is sending Titus and two other enthusiastic brothers one who has been proclaiming the good news and another who has been trained and is eager to meet the Corinthians. Paul doesn’t want there to be complaints about the administration of the generous gift being collected because the intent is to do the right thing by the faithful and by God.
