Prayers developed from the daily readings

Sunday 23 August 2015
Morning Prayer

Psalm 150

This last psalm is of joyful and exuberant praise – instruments, dancing. “Let everything that breathes praise the Lord” (v6).

Mark 11: 11 and 15 - 19

Jesus, on entering Jerusalem goes directly to the temple, looks around then stays the night in Bethany.

The next day he goes to the temple and drives out the merchants. He quotes Isaiah about God’s house being one of prayer for all nations. Instead the merchants had made it a den of robbers. The chief priests and teachers of the Law fear him and plan how to kill him. Meanwhile, his teaching amazes the people.

Evening Prayer

1 Kings 10: 1 – 13

The Queen of Sheba comes to visit Solomon and to see for herself whether the stories of his wisdom are correct. She is breathless when she uncovers that he is wiser, has greater wealth and has a better-ordered kingdom than reports indicate. She gives great gifts of gold and spices.

Solomon also receives sandalwood and precious stones from Ophir, which he uses to make supports for the temple and his house, and to make musical instruments.

Psalm 34: 15 – 22

God is watching. God sees and hears the cries of the righteous. God is near the broken-hearted and those with crushed spirits. The Lord redeems the life of his servants: none who take refuge in God will be condemned.

Ephesians 6: 18 – 24

Paul advises us to pray in the spirit at all times and pray for fellow Christians everywhere. He asks for prayers for himself in his work spreading the gospel.

He introduces Tychicus who will bring the letter to them and blesses the Ephesians.

Redeeming and loving God, you listen to us and hear as when we call on you in prayer and praise. We thank you that you shelter, redeem and bless all those who seek you. Bring us to the moment of breathless realisation of your great love, care and supply so that we praise you and pray for all those who spread your gospel bringing your blessings to the people of all nations through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord and Saviour. Amen.
