Sunday 3 May 2015
Morning Prayer

Psalm 116

The psalm gives thanks to God for healing. Even when he is profoundly depressed the psalmist trusts in God and rejoices in salvation rededicating himself to God and offering heart felt praise.

John 8:31 – 36

Jesus talks to the Jews who believe in him. He explains how they are slaves to sin and that continuing in the truth as shown by Jesus will set them free.

God of healing, God of freedom from sin to you alone we offer our praise and thanksgiving. Give us grace to be your children and forgive each other so that we spread your healing and freedom from fear throughout the world through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Evening Prayer

Acts 13: 16a and 26 - 43

Paul, in the synagogue in Antioch continues to tell the story of Jesus. He says that the people of Jerusalem did not understand what Jesus was saying and did not recognise who he was and so fulfilled all the prophesies. Though he had committed no wrong they had him killed.
His resurrection was foretold in the scriptures and Paul quotes the texts.

He proclaims that through this man, forgiveness of sins is possible in a way not possible through the Law of Moses. He then quotes Habakkuk and tells those who scoff to be amazed for in their day unbelievable things will be done.

Paul and Barnabas leave the synagogue and as they go the people ask them to come again next Sabbath and preach.

Psalm 98

This psalm is a summons to all nations and people to praise the Lord and rejoice in this name. God’s is the victory, God’s is the strength and we are God’s people. God comes to judge the earth with righteousness and equity.

1 John 4: 1 - 8

The writer says we are to test spirits and prophets. If they do not confess that Jesus came in flesh and was from God we are to know they are from the world. Though the world might listen to them we won’t and they will not listen to us. We are to love each other since God first loved us and sent his Son for us.
