Morning Prayer

Psalm 30

All glory, strength and holy splendour is our Lord. The Lord is compared to a great storm, whirlwind and earthquake – all trying to convey God’s awesome presence.

Genesis 2: 1 – 3

God creates the seventh day: the day of rest.

John 19: 38 – 42

Joseph of Arimathea asks to remove Jesus’ body. Nicodemus brings myrrh and aloes. They care for Jesus’ body and wrap him in cloth in the traditional way. They lay him in a new tomb in a garden.

God of you universe, you came and experienced our human condition even to death leaving a helpless body requiring the last gentle touch of humans. Give us the grace to be gentle with those we know who are facing death, who are frail and who are helpless so that we may enter into this holy time with you and love you for your sake alone through Jesus Christ Your Son our Lord. Amen.

Evening Prayer

Psalm 31: 19 – 24

The psalmist blesses and praises the Lord because when there was trouble the psalmist felt separated from God, but now knows that prayers are answered. The psalmist summarises: love the Lord, be strong and take courage when you wait for God.

Micah 7: 14 – 20

Micah prays for God to take control, shepherd the people and show great miracles as in the past. Once God’s majesty is seen all nations will be humbled and recognise God’s power. He ends with awe filled statements about the forgiveness of God and how our sins are cast away and how compassionate God is to us all.

1 John 5: 3 – 12

God wants us to obey his commandments – and that is not hard with faith and belief in Christ the Son of God. The truth of this is in Christ’s baptism, crucifixion and his spirit. Belief in Jesus places God’s testimony in our hearts and we live life fully.

Holy Lord, in the silence of this night give us courage to wait, knowledge of your forgiveness and compassion that makes us new, determination to step out every day in faith and hope and love confident in our baptism, your crucifixion and your Holy Spirit in our hearts through Jesus Christ our Lord.
