Morning Prayer

Psalms 99 and 100

Songs of praise to God who rules, is awesome, loves justice and fairness and will stand by us. We are to come, be joyful, sing, be thankful, know we are loved and will be loved forever.

Genesis 25: 5 – 11 and 19 – 34

The story of the end of Abraham’s life and the birth of Rebekah and Isaac’s twins Esau and Jacob. Esau sold his right to lead the family and a double share of the inheritance to Jacob for a pot of stew.

Luke 5: 1 – 11

Jesus is teaching people from a boat. He asks Simon to take the boat out into deeper water and put in the nets. Simon has been fishing all night without success but does as instructed. The catch is huge, too big for one boat. Simon recognises Christ’s divinity and confesses his sinfulness. Here begins the discipleship of “fishing for people”.

O God who makes us sing for joy we give you thanks and praise. Keep our hearts and minds open to you today so that when an opportunity comes to be obedient to you we will act knowing that we are loved and will be loved forever through Jesus Christ Your Son our Lord. Amen.

Evening Prayer

Psalm 103

A beautiful psalm of praise blessing God with every part of our being and for every benefit we have been given especially God's eternal love. This is a luscious reverent, adoring psalm.

Jeremiah 18: 12 – 23

Jeremiah condemns Judah for turning her back on God. It is to him as unnatural as snow not clinging to a mountain. It is cause for ridicule. But then a plot emerges against Jeremiah and he, who has defended the people before God, now prays for them to be mercilessly punished.

1 Timothy 1: 1 – 11

Paul urges Timothy to not get caught up in technicalities but to build the people’s capacity for love from pure hearts, good conscience and sincere faith.

Lord your eternal love binds us to you. We thank you for all the blessings in our lives and world. Strengthen us to deliberately focus on building up each other’s capacity for love. Resource us to recognise and celebrate those of pure heart, good conscience and sincere faith so that all can see them as models to your glory and everlasting praise through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
