Prayers developed from the daily readings

Morning Prayer

Psalm 22: 1 – 22

This portion of the psalm is a solemn prayer for deliverance from a dreadful illness. It is an illness that has detractors circling the psalmist. The psalmist feels alone and separated from God but is reminded of all the times God was there in the past for the Israelites. The psalmist is humble, asks to be saved not just from the illness but also from any temptation.

Song of Songs 4: 1 – 8

The man describes the woman’s features, her beauty, eyes like doves, hair, teeth, lips, neck with her necklace. He will be intimate with her until dawn. He finds her flawless.

John 5: 19 – 29

Jesus says he models what he does on God, through his relationship with God. God loves Jesus and shows him what God is doing. God will show greater works than Jesus has done so far. Raising the dead – giving life – and judging are things Jesus has been given to do. Whoever does not honour Jesus does not honour the father.

Those who hear Jesus’s voice and truly believe pass from death to life.

Holy Lord, lover of our souls you sent your Son to give us life, make us flawless in your sight and ultimately bring judgement. Take us in your gentle embrace and help us see each other as you see us so that we are models of your love, gentleness and grace in the world through Jesus Christ Your Son our Lord. Amen.

Evening Prayer

Psalms 22: 23 – 32 and 23

The second section of the psalm, calls for all people who respect and honour God to give praise, glorify and stand in awe! God has delivered the psalmist from deadly illness and this evidence shows that all God’s promises are secure. The Lord rules in all places and future generations will continue God’s praise.

This is the well-known 23rd Psalm. The Lord is compared to a shepherd who makes sure the sheep are well pastured, have clean water, are at peace and have nothing to fear. God makes us holy (anoints us) and gives us good things our whole life long.

Song of Songs 4: 9 – 5:1

The man describes the woman like a beautiful locked garden. He compares her to the beauty and fragrance of the place. She responds calling the winds to come and extend the reach of the fragrance so that the man comes to her. He responds that he has arrived and, she is his bride.

Ephesians 5: 6 – 20

Paul warns to stay away from deceivers and live instead as children of light – seeking what is pleasing to God. Shine a light on darkness and expose it: awake, rise and let Christ shine in you!

Live your life wisely making the most of your time. Sing hymns and spiritual songs. Make melody, lift up your hearts at all times giving thanks to God in the name of Jesus.

Life-giving God of wisdom you show us the priorities that will keep us alive in you. Remind us each day that we are secure in you and anointed by you through Christ so that we praise and glorify you and take time to shine for you, sing, lift up our hearts and make joyful sounds to your glory through Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour. Amen.
