Prayers developed from the daily readings

Morning Prayer

Psalm 72: 12 – 21 check

This psalm asks that the King be blessed. Justice, righteousness, prosperity for the people and production, defence of the poor and deliverance for the needy and oppressed are requested. May the king live long and be gentle. Peace, dominion, abundance, compassion are all in this appeal. The psalm ends praising and blessing God who makes all things possible.

Hebrews 1: 8 - 2: 4 check

Hebrews begins with declaring the centrality of Christ the son and his role at the beginning of all time, his place above the angels and seated at the right hand of God.

The writer argues the case for accepting Jesus as the bringer of our salvation. We know Jesus was human and his words, his wonders, miracles and gift of the Holy Spirit are to guide us to salvation. So we had better pay attention and not pass up this chance.

Holy Lord God of all creation, you came down from heaven as a baby and lived with us. Let us joyfully celebrate the Lordship of Christ and your offer of salvation so that we may again be open to your words, your miracles and the gift of your Holy Spirit through Jesus Christ our saviour, Amen.

Evening Prayer

2 Samuel 7: 18 – 29

This is David’s awe-inspired prayer to God giving thanks for God’s promises, accepting the gift, praising God and articulating that this is for Israel who God loves and has redeemed. David recognises and names the Lord as God.

Psalm 89: 26 – 38

This section of the psalm states the unalterable covenant with David and his line forever even if the children violate God’s laws, the relationship with David will continue.

Mark 12: 35 – 37

Jesus, in the temple courts asks, how can we say that the Christ is the Son of David when David says “The Lord said to my Lord: sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet” (v. 36 and Psalm 110: 1). So, if David calls the Christ “Lord”, how can the Christ be David’s son?

Holy God of wonders, mysteries and miracles you have supported the people who recognised you from the beginning of time and through all troubles and tribulations. Open our hearts and minds so that we give you thanks and praise for all the wonders, all your gifts, your promises and your salvation through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
