Psalm 113
Praise
to God especially for responding to those who are humble and poor and bringing
them to sit with princes. There is no other god like this.
Genesis 17: 1 – 13
Abram is 99 when God makes a covenant with him. God
instructs Abram to live a live with God and be blameless. God tells him he will
be father to many, is to call himself Abraham, grants Abraham Canaan and
institutes circumcision for males.
Colossians 3: 12 – 17
Paul tells us to clothe ourselves with compassion,
kindness, humility, meekness and patience. We are to bear with one another and
forgive as the Lord has forgiven us. We are to clothe ourselves with love and
let the peace of Christ rule our hearts: be thankful. Let the word of Christ
dwell in our hearts. Teach each other in wisdom and gratitude, sing psalms,
hymns and spiritual songs to God and in everything we do, do it in the name of
the Lord Jesus Christ and give thanks to God through him.

Holy, loving and compassionate God, by your grace you have
chosen each of us as you chose Abraham. Help us walk before you leading
blameless lives by daily exercising love, compassion, forgiveness, kindness,
meekness, humility and patience so that the peace of Christ rules our hearts
and our lives are full of thank and praise to you through Jesus Christ Your Son our Lord. Amen.

Evening
Prayer
Psalm 115
The psalm starts praising God for faithful and
constant expression of love.
The psalmist ridicules the idol-makers who like their
idols may have the physical senses (eyes, ears, noses…) but make no use of
them. God is contrasted as a sensing and active presence worthy to be trusted.
The psalmist blesses the hearer of the psalm.
Exodus 3: 13 – 17
God is commissioning Moses. Moses asks God’s name. God
says, “I am who I am”. Moses is to say to the people that “I am has sent me to
you”. God clarifies that Abraham, Isaac and Jacob’s god is one and that is who
God is. God instructs Moses to gather the people and the elders and tell them
that God has heard their misery and will bring them out of Egypt to the lands
of Canaan and surrounds.
Colossians 2: 8 – 15
Paul
says, make sure we don’t get caught up in ideologies or theories –
human-generated or natural – that are not according to Christ. In Christ the
fullness of deity dwells bodily. In Christ we have come to fullness and been
spiritually circumcised. We are buried with Christ in baptism and raised with
him through faith in God’s power. God forgave us and cleared our record of sin,
nailing all to the cross, disarming and triumphing over rulers and powers.

Holy God,
one God keep us alert during this coming year for those ideas, fads and
fashions that turn our heads from Christ and the cross on which he died so that
we may be your steadfast people living our lives in your service and to your
glory and honour through Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour. Amen.
