Psalm
37: 1 – 17
There
are people who do evil and prosper. Their presence is a challenge to us to
choose faith, to do good things, to stay calm, to not get angry or envious of
their wealth. Stay with the Lord and be patient. It is their story and his job
if they continue to reject him.
Amos 1: 11 – 2: 5
Amos continues prophesying
punishment for Judah and Israel and the surrounding nations some for atrocities
against humans.
John 5: 19 – 30
Jesus says he models what
he does on God, through his relationship with God. God loves Jesus and shows
him what God is doing. God will show greater works than Jesus has done so far.
Raising the dead – giving life – and judging are two main things Jesus has been
given to do. Whoever does not honour Jesus does not honour the father.
Those who hear Jesus’s
voice and truly believe pass from death to life.

Psalm
37: 18 – 41
This
portion of the psalm continues with examples of God’s retribution for the
wicked and protection and salvation for the faithful and the meek.
Ezekiel 20: 18 – 38
Ezekiel continues to list
all the times the people have worshipped idols, followed other cult practices
including sacrifice of children. He says to those who come to consult God that
God will no be consulted by people who do these things.
Galatians 5: 16 – 26
If we live by the spirit
law does not bind us. This isn’t to say that we shouldn’t be law abiding. A
life of the spirit produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity,
faithfulness, gentleness and self-control there are no laws against these. We
focus on God’s spirit, not on the things that lead us to be being jealous or
angry or quarrelling or wasteful – there are laws against all those. If we
focus on things that lead us to behave badly we are focusing on things “of the
flesh” – not of the spirit.

Holy and wonderful God, you are the source of peace, joy, patience,
kindness, gentleness, generosity, faithfulness and self-control. Be with us as
we reflect on this day and help us be aware when our focus shifted from you.
Give us insight to know what we could have done differently so that we refocus
on you and step out again tomorrow in faith and hope and love to be your people
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, and the power of your Holy Spirit.
Amen.
