Collects

Prayers developed from the daily readings

Thursday 15 May 2014
Morning Prayer

Psalm 37: 1 – 17

There are people who do evil and prosper. Their presence is a challenge to us to choose faith, to do good things, to stay calm, to not get angry or envious of their wealth. Stay with the Lord and be patient. It is their story and his job if they continue to reject him.

Numbers 10:  35 – 11: 15

The Israelites in the desert complain.  Moses prays to God and says that the people want meat. Their wants and demands are too much for him to bear.

John 11: 45 – 54

There are people who witness Jesus bringing Lazarus back from the dead. They report to the Pharisees who become scared because the people are likely to believe Jesus is the Messiah and then the Romans will probably destroy everyone and the temple. The high priest Caiaphas said it was better for one man to die for the people than the nation to die – there is an aside here that he had already prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation and gather into one the dispersed children of God.

Almighty God you care for us. You care so much that you listen to our concerns and sent your own Son to die for our sake and the sake of every person. Please keep us thankful for your great mercies through this day so that we will be enlivened by you to do your will and live our lives to your glory through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord and the power of your Holy Spirit. Amen.

Evening Prayer

Psalms 37: 18 – 41

This portion of the psalm continues with examples of God’s retribution for the wicked and protection and salvation for the faithful and the meek.

Exodus 28: 1 – 6 and 29: 1 – 9

The first section is the description of God’s instructions to Moses about the garments the high priest will wear.

The second section is the instructions for ordaining Aaron’s sons. This instruction includes that they should wear a cap.

1 Corinthians 6: 1 – 11

Paul exhorts the Corinthians to use their Christian principles to settle disputes. It is better he says to be wronged or robbed. Those who defraud or rob will not attain the kingdom of God. He reminds people that they too were not perfect but have been washed, sanctified and justified in the name of Jesus and in God’s Spirit.

Loving God you have given us your commandments, instructions, guides, examples of people of faith and your Son to help us live our lives in your presence and glory. As we reflect on today, in that quiet time, bring us back to you and refresh us in your love and grace so that we may go out again with joy and purpose into your world tomorrow through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord and the power of your Holy Spirit. Amen.
