Collects

Prayers developed from the daily readings

Sunday 6 April 2014
Morning Prayer

Psalm 71: 1 – 14

“In your righteousness deliver me and rescue me” (v.2). An older person whose life has been full of God’s grace and mercy now confronts personal foes who seek to take advantage of the psalmists frailty. “But I will hope continually and will praise you yet more and more” (v.14).

2 Corinthians 11: 21 – 31

Paul has been humble and criticised for it while other false ministers boast of their deeds. He sees boasting as foolish, but if he must, he will. He lists all the times he has been imprisoned, beaten even stoned. He prefers to boast about the things that show him to be a weak and anxious person so that God’s grace can be seen in his life.

Collect for Morning Prayer

God our strength and our redeemer, we thank you for choosing us, just as we are, to be your faithful people and to show your grace and glory to others. Be with us this day and assist us, even in our weakness, to be examples of your grace and love through Jesus Christ our Lord and the power of your Holy Spirit. Amen.

Sunday 6 April 2014
Evening Prayer

Exodus 6: 2 – 13

God tells Moses to let the Israelites know they will be freed. Moses does but the people cannot hear because they are too oppressed and dispirited. God tells Moses to go back to Pharaoh. Moses counters with – the people won’t listen, Pharaoh won’t listen either. God gives Moses and Aaron their task.

Psalm 131

A gentle psalm of trust in God: quiet, calm trust.

Matthew 27:32 – 56

We are with Christ at the crucifixion from the compelling of Simon of Cyrene to carry the cross, through the taunting, and the darkness across the land, to the final appeal, the earthquake and death of Christ.

Almighty God, when you directly instruct us to do your will we need to love you and trust you. Your purposes are beyond our ability to understand. Help us to trust you more and more every day and to do your will when called through Jesus Christ who trusted you and won victory over death and the redemption of us all. Amen.
