Morning Prayer

Psalm 114

God chooses people, establishes a nation – he is with them from the start. The seas retreat, the Jordan River gives way, mountains and hills shake – the earth recognises God’s hand. God is with them every step; even rock turns into a spring of fresh water.

Revelation 19: 1 – 9

This is a segment of praise in heaven and earth for God the true and eternal ruler of the earth and everything seen and unseen. The smoke from the destruction of earthly powers rises to heaven like incense. Christ is compared to a bridegroom; the church to the bride and all the faithful the invited guests in great celebration of eternal closeness and unity. The section ends with a blessing.

Almighty God ruler of all there is, seen and unseen, from everlasting to everlasting. Help us as we come to worship you and spend time in prayer to feel your great love and care for us. May we then pass on this depth of concern and love to all we meet and in all we do today so that your love may be manifest throughout the world through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord and the power of your Holy Spirit. Amen.

Evening Prayer

2 Samuel 22: 1 – 7 and 47 – 51

David has been saved from being killed by Saul. He praises God. He explains how utterly hopeless his situation was and how close he was to death. David praises God and promises to praise him forever, he and his descendants.

Exodus 15: 1b – 13

This is a song of praise sung by Moses and the Israelites after their passing through the sea. They praise God’s might and steadfast love.

Mark 16: 1 – 8

When the Sabbath is over three women go to the tomb. They find the tomb open and a young man clothed in white inside who tells them not to be alarmed, that they are looking for Jesus Christ of Nazareth who had been crucified, that Christ has been raised and he shows them where Jesus had been. The young man tells them to tell Peter that Christ is going to Galilee. The women flee in terror and say nothing to anyone.

Our God, you exceed our ability to understand the extent of your power and authority. We struggle to understand that all nature, all rulers and even death are under your control. We thank you for all the gifts and all the blessings we receive. Be with us this evening as we sit with and contemplate your awesome power and might and take comfort that you are and are with us eternally, through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord and the power of your Holy Spirit. Amen
