Morning Prayer

Psalm 27

“The Lord is my light and salvation; whom should I fear” (v1). This psalm is full of praise and recognition of God’s protection and care. The psalmist asks god to be within – in the heart. There is a plea for deliverance from adversaries and a statement of belief. “I believe that I shall see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living” (v13).

2 Corinthians 10: 12 – 18

Paul talks about the providence of God in his experience of ministry and that we, who know Christ are like a fragrance  – one of life to life – the aroma of Christ to God.

Magnificent God, we praise you and thank you for all the wonderful things you have given us and, especially Jesus Christ your son, our Lord. We thank you for the grace and salvation you give us. Help us every day, to seek your shelter, your comfort, your teaching, and your love, so that we may appear to you as the fragrance of life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Evening Prayer

Exodus 2: 23 – 3: 8

Moses has been in charge of his father-in-law’s sheep, leaves them in safety and goes to Mt Horeb – the mountain of God. He is distracted from his path by a burning bush. God speaks to him from the bush and tells him, that Moses is on sacred ground and that God will bring the Israelites out of Egypt and away from slavery.

Psalm 119: 9 – 24

This portion of the psalm asks how can young people keep pure? The answer: knowing God and the commandments through scripture. The psalmist asks for aid in the study and living of the commandments and asks to be delivered from any scorn from others who do not share the delight that comes from God.

Matthew 26: 36 – 56

Jesus and the disciples are in the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus is distressed and goes to pray and asks the disciples to stay awake. Three times they sleep. Three times he prays to God that he will do God’s will even if it means death. Judas arrives and betrays him. A disciple cuts of the ear of the slave of the high priest. Jesus explains that the defence of men doesn’t help, he could call on the Lord but doing so means that scripture will not be fulfilled. Jesus is taken into custody and the disciples flee.
